Winery and Tasting Room
Esparto, Yolo County, CA

Design inspiration for this winery facility came from the combination of the vernacular agricultural buildings and the rolling hills of this more recently established grape growing region of Yolo County.

This ground-up building is situated on a bluff amongst 1,500 acres of vineyards located in the gentle rolling Dunnigan Hills wine grape growing region in northwest Yolo County. Designed as a 3,500 sq ft wine tasting and conference facility, ZdV introduced urban detailing and sophistication to the rural, agricultural setting. The client wanted a non-traditional identity, requesting the new building be a unique response to the property’s existing agricultural buildings. The creative implementation of a clearspan, steel frame Butler Building allowed for a flexible interior program with and intentional exposing of the structure. The curvilinear roof and oversized front entry awning was designed to mimic the surrounding topography. R.H. Phillips is best known for their Toasted Head Label.
